April 2022 CD Practitioner Gathering Harvest
On Wednesday, April 13th we convened as community development practitioners once again for our monthly peer-based conversations.
You can access the full notes here, or flip through the note taking slides below!
We had two breakout rooms have conversations , and the highlights below were gathered from the group debrief.
Community Development work vs Crisis Management work
Explored how crises work with community development sometimes - we have to deal with them so that community members can get what they need
Help people to do things on their own so that we aren’t always handing out resources
Creative ways to gather with communities outdoors
Know your community, be grassroots, really know your populations, their interests, and build on them
Know your community’s assets and focus on activating them (e.g. the Little Free Libraries, the park spaces, the parking lots)
Bring indoors outside (e.g. bingo, painting)
Make tools and activities accessible to everyone. For instance, have a ‘Wheels Day’ instead of a ‘Bike Day’. Not everyone has a bike, and you might get more involved by signalling that roller skates, scooters, wheel chairs etc. work too!
