March 2023 CD Practitioner Gathering Harvest

By Amanda Palmer

On Wednesday, March 8th we hosted our third gathering for community development practitioners of 2023.

We had two conversations with a lot of notes captured!. See our full harvests here or in the slides below. We also shared some thoughts on the common thread of relationship building, which have been captured below.

How are we inspiring/motivating residents to take action?

  • Relationships! Listen, learn, know community and what they can do.

  • Passion gets people involved & work hard. If passion is there they will build the skills they need, or find the people who has the needed skills.

  • Get feedback on how people want to receive information, and have multi-access points.

HOw are we implementing ideas in real world settings?

  • Discussion on events that are happening in communities.

  • There tends to be a lot of talk and no actions.

  • Relationships are important.

  • Use work of community partners to help develop and implement ideas.

Sharing Circle: What are some of your go-to relationship building practices?

  • Communication & interactions! Give time to allow relationships to develop, especially if limited to virtual interactions. In person is more effective than emails.

  • Recognize when people are passionate about something & pull together commonalities among people. Identify strengths of people and use them.

  • Empathy and realize you might have experienced different situations but you may have felt similar feelings. Share your experiences and guide them to resources you used when you were in a similar situation.

  • Show up! Show up to what others are doing and putting on, not just what you’re hosting.
