July 2023 CD Practitioner Gathering Harvest - CDLI
On Wednesday, July 12th we hosted our seventh gathering for community development practitioners of 2023. The sixth in the year was the Mini Summit on June 14th - read about that special iteration here.
We had three conversations with notes captured. See our shared harvest here or in the slides below.
In the share back participants identified key take away/points of reflection that came from these conversations:
Room 2: How can we build a sense of community between unhoused and housed residents in neighbourhoods?
Active Listening in Community is a must with all groups and specifically cultural groups we aren’t a part of that are represented in the community we are working in. This is a pre-condition for cultural humility.
Not only service provision but engaging in relationship with.
Room 3: Grassroots & formally established organizations: what are some key things both can learn from each other?
Need for both types of organizations and the benefits to coming together/collaboration.
When looking at strengths or alignment ways to support one another arise.
There are many grassroots organizations and it can be a challenge to navigate who does what and where to support.
Room 1: Community development professional development opportunities.
There were no specific reflections from this group outside of the benefit that lifelong learning can provide when working in community. This slide contains some links for resources in both web and physical book form.
*Note that in September the COP will be trying a slightly new format with a guest co-host. Your experience in the gathering will be very similar to what you experience currently. The only change will be that the co-host will provide the discussion topics for the rooms. Join in September to try this format with us and contribute to conversation on “Community Development in Perpetuity?” which was Tyson Bankert’s session topic at Mini Summit 2023.
