December 2023 CD Practitioner Gathering Harvest - CDLI
On Wednesday, December 13th we hosted our twelfth and final gathering for community development practitioners of 2023.
We had eight conversations proposed with discussions and notes on two. See our shared harvest here or in the slides below. If you note proposed conversations that you would like to be a part of but you weren’t able to make it to this gathering please feel free to email your interest to cdli@caryacalgary.ca.
In the share back participants identified key take away/points of reflection that came from these conversations:
Room 1: Storytelling as a means for creating community spaces of belonging for those experiencing multiple barriers such as isolation.
Sharing stories is trust building, it takes time, and intentional creation of space. Builds opportunities for people to support one another in ways not defined within a program.
Hard to measure impact, pre and post surveys help to translate impact but can’t represent the total impact.
Storytelling practices are part of the fabric of many cultures and it will happen organically outside of formalized institutions/organizations.
Room 3: How are you making the case to use placemaking as a community development approach in your work?
*Note there are many links for data/articles, etc. to support placemaking in this slide!
Placemaking is a tool that can be used in many different approaches to community development.
Placemaking is a tool that can lead to increased quality of life in direct and indirect ways.
One placemaking effort often sparks more from others!
CDLI looks forward to welcoming Community Development Practitioners back on January 10th for our first Community of Practice Open Space Gathering in 2024! Dates for the year are in the graphic below.
