Storytelling for Change: Fostering Change Through Workshops - A conversation with Kent Patel
I recently had the privilege of sitting down with Kent Patel, a passionate community builder whose work centre’s on fostering connection, collaboration, and (inner, and collective) growth in Calgary’s Sunalta neighbourhood. These principles guide him as he organizes community workshops that foster belonging and understanding—particularly through the lens of, Truth & Reconciliation, anti-racism, and decolonization.
Kent’s commitment to honouring Indigenous culture shines through in his programming. Around 60% of his workshops are rooted in Indigenous Culture (i.e. Crafts, Plant Medicines, Storytelling). These aren’t just opportunities to learn new skills; they’re pathways to deeper respect for, and understanding of Indigenous traditions, protocols, and knowledge. Kent ensures these workshops are respectful, and collaborative, working closely with Indigenous facilitators to ensure cultural accuracy and authenticity.
A memorable moment from our conversation was Kent’s reflection on the importance of equality and inclusivity. In his workshops, everyone sits in a circle. “In a circle, everyone is equal,” he shares. “There’s no top, bottom, or corners. It’s all about equality.” This approach fosters an environment where every participant feels valued and heard, whether they’re a regular attendee or a newcomer to the workshop. Healing is done in connection, not isolation.
Kent believes that beauty often emerges from chaos. “Sometimes things don’t go as planned, but that’s when real community shows itself,” he reflects. His ability to adapt and embrace organic growth is foundational to his work, allowing the workshops to evolve in ways that strengthen connections and bring people together.
The impact of Kent’s workshops extends far beyond the activities themselves. By creating these spaces, he builds bridges between people of all backgrounds and fosters a sense of belonging in the Sunalta neighbourhood. As one participant shared in a testimonial, “Kent’s dedication has transformed Sunalta into a place that feels like home, even for those of us who were once strangers to this city.”
For Kent, the workshops are a means, not an end. His goal is to empower others to share their passions and lead their own workshops, ensuring the work of decolonization and anti-racism continues to grow. “What I do isn’t about me,” Kent emphasizes. “It’s about creating opportunities for others to share, connect, and heal.” Through his work, Kent Patel reminds us of the power of community-driven initiatives to create lasting change—one workshop, one connection, and one circle at a time.
